Youth and young adults who have come into contact with the child welfare and juvenile or criminal justice system and their families are experts in identifying areas for improvement, setting priorities and developing solutions. Without such expertise, remedies to the challenges facing students in D.C.’s care will not be responsive to students' needs and will not have the sustainable positive impact that we seek. Therefore, students and families must be engaged and empowered to lead with their expertise at every stage of the SCDC’s work.
